Goodbye to Vista – For now or?
After spending the last four months getting to know the ins and outs of Windows Vista Ultimate I decided to go back to XP. My new “Built for Windows Vista” Dell Precision M4300 2.4Ghz Centrino Duo Laptop with 4 GB of ram, 1 GB of speed boost and 512 Nvidia Graphics card just cannot seem to boot up in under 5 minutes, open a photo in under 2 minutes or give me the power I need. Even the Aero is annoying. Just to move a few GB of files I have to watch the pretty files moving around. I understand that Microsoft is trying to please the home user, however when someone buys the Business or Ultimate version there should be a choice to have all the bells and whistles or to install a base package where it is tailored for speed. I watched my disk performance hover around 25% for 5 minutes with nothing open. Why should anything be accessing the HD? No nothing was scheduled to run except Vista’s services designed to make the usr experience better. I know I can get a few performance points out of some additional tweaks but I do not want to spend the time on that. Just the basics for me.
There are a few things I like about Vista, but for the life of me I just cannot think of what they are right now. We’ll see how the downgrade goes.

So I still did not go back to XP. Christmas has been so busy I did not have the time. Now with me going back to work, who knows how much time I will have. Just have to deal a bit longer.
I still did not downgrade. Things have been way too busy, but now I am thinking about installing some crazy flavor of linux and running a virtual machine for XP. Who knows?
