Credit Help – I hope it’s a start

March 20th, 2008 No comments

While browsing around the various credit report sites, if found some very interesting information. Some of the more important bits of information I found were;

  1. The three major credit reporting sites. In my previous post, I warned about the possibility of getting yourself registered for services you did not want. These are less likely to have such a suck in, yet not impossible. If you are looking to get your credit report each agency will give you one free report per year (Something LifeLock
sends you automatically periodically throughout the year). Remember to read everything before you commit. Also, remember you are giving out your Social Security Number – ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WITH THIS NUMBER!!!

    1. Equifax – www.equifax.com
    2. Experian – www.experian.com
    3. TransUnion – www.transunion.com
  2. Exclude yourself or family member from unsolicited credit and insurance offers. This is one service provided by LifeLock which they do automatically. However, you can opt out (for 5 years or forever) or opt in using 1-888-5optout (1-888-567-8688). I just did this myself to be sure and to see what is involved. It is very easy and quick. When I was asked for my SS# I remained silent to see what would happen. It will ask again – remain silent again. It will then say it is trying to make the request without it. Mine went through fine. Better to not give out your SS# if you do not have to. :)
  3. Check out the Federal Trade Commission’s web site. (US only). You will find every bit of information you might need there. Plus, you can always call to get some additional information if needed. Remember this is a federal service you pay for with your tax dollars, use it! www.ftc.gov/credit

LifeLock does all this and more at about $10/month. While many places will warn you after something has gone wrong, LifeLock stops those things that could go wrong. Would you rather get fixed after a car accident or prevent the accident?

As with anything regarding your personal information, use my suggestions as a starting point. Trust only yourself and fully investigate your options and possibilities.

Free Report be sure to read

March 18th, 2008 No comments

The other week I couldn’t get that jingle out of my head “Dee DeDe De De Dot Com”, now you can’t either. So I checked out the site, signed up and received my free credit report. I was happy with the result, filed it away and pretty much forgot about the experience. About a week later I noticed a strange charge in my account. Calling the number I realized that when you sign up for your free credit report you are also signing up for a credit protection service at $14.95 per month. I could not fight the charge since it is clearly stated (in a dim font color) on the main page about the service you will sign up for if you do the report. Needless to say I canceled it but I am still covered through them and LifeLock until the end of the month.

Just be careful when you are filling out anything. You never know what junk they will suck you in for in the process. There is a seven (7) day window to cancel this service without being charged. Cancel it then go to LifeLock and sign up for that, you will not regret the decision.

First Lady Bill Clinton or Vice President Bill Clinton?

January 28th, 2008 No comments

22nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of AmericaSection. 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Sec. 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

Reading this I cannot find any reason why New York Senator Hilary Clinton (if chosen to be the Democratic candidate for the President of the United States) could not choose her husband Bill to be her Vice President.  While it is highly unlikely, mostly because Bill would never take such a low profile job, it could happen.

I really don’t mind the idea of Bill being first lady of the United States.   He is universally likeable, well mannered and with Al Gore at his side they care a lot about the environment (even if the North and South poles are getting colder and global warming is a hoax – look it up, do the math).  Rush Limbaugh roughly said; “if she gets into office we would have to endure the effects of watching our President age over the next four years”, why not offset that with the dignity of an ex-President becoming more distinguished?  He can warm our hearts with tales of sax playing, and fine cigars while Mrs. President takes care of things around the world.  Maybe it is the world we live in today, the eventual shift from the man being head of the house – king of the castle – bringing home the bacon, to dual income families where both parents work – daycare raises the kids – TV takes over where daycare ends, now to the woman goes to work and the man staying at home watching soaps and eating bon-bon’s.  cleaning, doing laundry, ironing, dishes, cooking, vacuuming, dusting and raising the children.  No I am not going to turn this into a war of the sexes, nor will I be burning my jock anytime soon.  It is not the woman aspect that I say away from in our Presidential candidate, I don’t care about race, gender or sexual orientation.  Just as long as you think the way I do, agree with my opinion and do the things I want done.  Isn’t that the same thing we look for in everyone?  Sure we all say that having differing opinions makes things interesting but when it comes down to it, it is far less stressful – therefore we are happier.  Isn’t that the ultimate goal for each of us?  Being happy.  But what does being happy mean?  To me it is being debt free.  Free from the shackles of credit card payments, free from worrying about the next mortgage payment.  The last few years have really put a dent into our finances.  Some things ARE more important than money (insert important things for yourself).  If Bill does become First Lady of the United States and I am able to pay off all my debt then hey, I’m happy.  I just hope I do not need to use the emergency room or any other medical issues arise.  I might be better off finding a witch doctor somewhere in the rain forests.  How are the rain forests doing these days?  That was the big thing back in the early ‘90’s, Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco ran around the rain forest looking for peek 92 or some odd number.

What was I talking about?  Oh!  1992, Bill was the President then.  Things were good I guess, if all we had to worry about was a far off jungle and bugs in our sugar dishes.  I was much younger then too so I had very little to worry about.

I think I lost my train of thought again – Interruptions!  So before I get into trouble I’ll stop here.

Free Rice!

January 23rd, 2008 No comments

I’ve had a bit of a slump. Nothing really interesting at work, nothing at home (that I care to talk about) – no major developments inFree Rice anything for me. So I’ve been trolling around the internet looking for something interesting. I came across a site that will donate 20 grains of rice to United Nations World Food Program for every vocabulary word you correctly answer. I went a few times and did better than I thought – 500 grains. Might only be a mouthful but it’s something, maybe we can fill a bowls worth with all my readers, haha!  Total as of this writing, they FreeRice.com generated 15,435,413,150 grains of rice.  Not too bad.  Wonder what that looks like all together?

Many of us view rice as a last resort, easy to make addition to our meals or even the unnecessary “filler” restaurants add to make the dinner look bigger.  To some, it is their entire meal.  I won’t get carried way, we all know people do not have what we have.  Still, nobody can live on rice alone…

Pingback and Tracebacks.

January 19th, 2008 No comments

I my not be new to blogging but I am still a newbie. I like to write and talk about things but never really dove into the workings of a blog and how it relates to other blogs. Since I’ve been posting more often recently I thought it might be a good idea to start to learn a little more. One thing that has baffled me was the Pingback and Traceback topics. So I went to google and searched for “how to pingback”. This site was listed first – How Internet Business Works There is a great video on the difference of both and how to use them effectively.

With this post I am doing my first traceback! Thanks for the knowledge!

Windows XP!

January 15th, 2008 No comments

Okay, not officially back on XP but I am running full screen Windows XP through a virtual machine. My Vista has been randomly rebooting after the nVidia driver update MS suggested. Not to bash MS too much I went to the nVidia site and downloaded the latest driver and still getting reboots. I have to admit Vista does get everything running again.

I’ve been reading more about Macs and am convincing myself that MAC’s are the way to go. Their simplicity, the limited amount of needed wires in the iMac. Now the new Mac book Air (WoW!). I just realize I never installed firefox on this XP Machine so I now have to spell check this post…

Anyway, I guess just file this under junk or on my mind but I’m done for now. bah! forget the spell check!

Goodbye to Vista – For now or?

December 21st, 2007 2 comments

After spending the last four months getting to know the ins and outs of Windows Vista Ultimate I decided to go back to XP.  My new “Built for Windows Vista” Dell Precision M4300 2.4Ghz Centrino Duo Laptop with 4 GB of ram, 1 GB of speed boost and 512 Nvidia Graphics card just cannot seem to boot up in under 5 minutes, open a photo in under 2 minutes or give me the power I need.  Even the Aero is annoying.  Just to move a few GB of files I have to watch the pretty files moving around.  I understand that Microsoft is trying to please the home user, however when someone buys the Business or Ultimate version there should be a choice to have all the bells and whistles or to install a base package where it is tailored for speed.  I watched my disk performance hover around 25% for 5 minutes with nothing open.  Why should anything be accessing the HD?  No nothing was scheduled to run except Vista’s services designed to make the usr experience better.  I know I can get a few performance points out of some additional tweaks but I do not want to spend the time on that.  Just the basics for me.

There are a few things I like about Vista, but for the life of me I just cannot think of what they are right now.  We’ll see how the downgrade goes.

After 20 some years! I solved the puzzle!

December 3rd, 2007 No comments

So after 20 some years I finally “solved” a Rubiks Cube. I had to cheat and use directions but it was still exciting to actually see the colours match up. Oh well, it’s not a big deal I guess especially since I had to use the directions. Maybe with some practice I will be able to do it on my own, then again since I already did it (sorta) I will probably only try it again when my son asks me to fix it.

Either way it was so much more fun than taking it apart and putting the pieces in the right place.
